The Jaguar supersport concept-car C-X75


C-X75 - THE MOST ADVANCED JAGUAR EVER CREATED

When Jaguar unveiled the C-X75 in 2010, it was the beginning of a new chapter in innovation and technological advancement that would see the car evolve from a design concept to a fully working prototype in just two years.



In that incredibly short time span, Jaguar and development partner Williams Advanced Engineering have created an all-wheel drive, plug-in parallel hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) with the world's highest specific power engine and Jaguar's first carbon composite monocoque chassis.



Although the decision was taken in 2012 that as a result of the global economic climate the C-X75 would not enter full production, it was clear that it was a powerful showcase for Jaguar’s world-leading expertise in lightweight vehicle construction and the ideal test-bed for the company’s innovative research into high-performance, low emission powertrains.



The great achievements in the development of C-X75 prototypes, including cutting-edge hybrid technologies, carbon composite materials and advanced design solutions pioneered in association with Williams Advanced Engineering will be utilised in other areas of research and development, innovative future products and next-generation engineering for the Jaguar brand.

Highest power and torque density


The C-X75 has a combined power output in excess of 850bhp and 1000Nm of torque, thanks to its state-of-the-art, Formula 1-inspired, 1.6-litre dual-boosted (turbocharged and supercharged) four-cylinder powerplant which generates 502 bhp at 10,000 rpm.



It is allied to the highest torque and power density electric motors in production, which generate a further 390 horsepower. The battery pack in the C-X75 is the highest continuously rated power PHEV pack in the world, capable of delivering more than 300kW over the full state of the charge window.


 The C-X75 can sprint from 0-100mph in less than six seconds, thanks to its advanced 7-speed automated manual transmission that allows gearshifts in under 200 milliseconds. The very first C-X75 prototype exceeded 200mph in testing with ease, and the car has a theoretical maximum velocity of 220mph.



The car's deployable aerofoil and underfloor aerodynamics create more than 200kg of downforce at 200mph, and active systems enhance its high-speed stability.

Ultra low emissions and pure electric mode


Thanks to the most extreme PHEV specification of any mobile battery in development, the C-X75 will also run for 60km in pure electric vehicle mode and its CO2 emissions fall below 89g/km.

The C-X75 project allows Jaguar to stake an even stronger claim as the UK's most significant investor in innovative technology. The results of the C-X75 programme, in particular in advanced powertrain technologies and lightweight composites, demonstrate Jaguar's technical leadership at the very cutting-edge of automotive development and manufacturing.



The timing of this automotive engineering project was to celebrate the significant milestone of 75 years of Jaguar Cars and to emphasize to the world how the innovative heritage of Jaguar and the UK car industry can lead the next generation of powertrain and vehicle development. This project was not only a showcase in technical innovation but also in rapid product development with strategic partners such as Williams Advanced Engineering and Lotus can raise the bar in project delivery technical complexity and timescales.



The platform for the launch of this vision to the world was Paris. The show car was presented at the 2010 motorshow, drawing attention from the media, competitors, suppliers and the public to its blend of classic beauty and innovation. The thinking behind C-X75 is to provide an owner with a unique car, capable of being driven as a road vehicle showing style with economy, then on occasion, take it to the race track to unleash its performance and power.


The decision was made in May 2011 to go forward to the next stage of the supercar development and engineer the concept into a production solution, based on 250 vehicles. Jaguar’s Programme and Vehicle Manager, Rob Atkin with Paul Newsome Head of Williams Advanced Engineering led the programme and engineering activities from Grove Oxfordshire under the guidance a steering committee chaired by Bob Joyce Jaguar’s Engineering Director.


To deliver this task the newly formed Jaguar / Williams project team carefully selected key suppliers that were competitive, experienced and focused on delivery. Lotus were selected as a key partner to develop two major function groups: the chassis system and the engine management system. This technical delivery was managed under the guidance of Paul Pywell, Head of Lotus.
To deliver the chassis and engine management systems meant working closely with the core programme team. Lotus brought its 60 years of motorsport, car production and engineering collaborative consultancy experience with OEMs to bring a blend of process and flexibility to meet the challenge.

Key vehicle attributes

One of the major challenges for the automotive industry is to drive down CO2 emissions. The key enablers for this are to engineer cleaner downsized engines coupled with hybrid technology and lighter vehicles to get more power per kg. It was important to think outside the box to capture the right technology content, reduce time to market and cost whilst improving performance and customer appeal. This is what the team set out to do.



After a review of the Paris concept car the technology moved away from the idea of micro gas turbines which uses jets to generate electricity for the battery and extend the range of the car. The technology direction was to develop a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle solution (PHEV) with a unique liquid and battery pack for this performance vehicle. This direction change allowed alignment with current production technology trends for CO2 reduction. Coupling boosted engine performance with additional power delivered from the battery through twin electric motor drives delivered additional performance.

New Jaguar F-Type with 300HP and 4-cylinder engine

The novelty is a Jaguar F-Type affordable but full of spirit


The range now features a 300PS 4-cylinder 2.0 litre Turbocharged Ingenium Petrol engine, the most advanced and efficient engine ever found in an F‑TYPE. While new driver assistance features are available to keep you even safer on every drive. This new model was presented these days in the 2017 New York Autoshow.






Inside, a refreshed interior features new slimline seats offering greater comfort and style. At the heart of the cabin, our next generation Touch Pro infotainment system provides connectivity and entertainment like never before.


The new engine is a turbocharged 2.0-litre Ingenium unit, producing 300bhp and 400Nm of torque generated from 1,500rpm. It’s paired exclusively to an 8-speed Quickshift automatic gearbox powering the rear wheels – there is no option for a manual gearbox.


Performance


This beast has its arguments although the more affordable power unit package, can do 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds, before going on to a top speed of 155mph.



The new 2.0-litre engine is only marginally slower than the next step up. The heavier 335bhp unit sends the F-Type to 62mph from standstill in 5.3 seconds and achieves a top speed of 161mph. However, the act of downsizing means the four-cylinder F-Type returns a claimed 39.2mpg with CO2 emissions of 163g/km, improving on the 33.6mpg and 199g/km CO2 figures of the V6 model.



The smaller, 2.0-litre engine means that the entry level F-Type is 52kg lighter than the V6 car sat above it in the range. The coupe weighs in at 1,525kg with the convertible slightly heavier at 1,545kg, and the lighter kerb weight means Jaguar has seen it necessary to alter the spring rates and steering setup to fine tune the four-cylinder car’s handling and road feel. Jaguar says it has also fine-tuned the exhaust, promising that the 2.0-litre engine isn’t going short in the sound department.


The introduction of the four-cylinder model forms part of the revised 2018 model year F-Type range. Additional driver assist features are now available, including autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign assist, lane keep assist and Jaguar’s adaptive speed limiter system.


The F-Type’s looks have also been refreshed with redesigned bumpers and full LED headlights. To single it out against the rest of the range, the new four-cylinder model comes with a distinctive, oblong exhaust tip mounted in the middle of the rear bumper. Unique lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels are part of the package too.


The new engine 2.0-litre supercharged

 The new Ingenium engine contributes to a weight reduction of 52kg, most of which is over the front axle, which Jaguar says is key to the four-cylinder F-type’s enhanced agility. It also says that tweaking the chassis settings to suit the lighter weight of the four-cylinder engine has improved steering response, body control and ride comfort.





There are a few ways in which the F-Type i4 could be more rewarding, indeed. For a start, peak power and torque arrive significantly quicker than in the V6, where maximum power doesn’t kick in until 6,500 rpm and maximum torque at 3,500 rpm. The four-cylinder is lighter, too, with a curb weight of 3,360 pounds for the coupe or 3,405 pounds for the convertible, an average of 105 pounds less than the comparable V6.

Interior



Inside, there are lighter seats, a Touch Pro infotainment system and new chrome and aluminium trim finishers.

“The result of the intensive development process is an even better balance, an even more connected feel and enhanced ride comfort. Enthusiasts will want to drive this car: this is a true F-type, with its own unique character.”
 

 
 The F-TYPE with Automatic Transmission is shown with Jet Leather and Suedecloth Sports seats, Jet upper fascia and stitch, Jet Morzine headlining and Jet carpets.

Pricing 

On sale this spring, the new F-Type four-cylinder will start from £49,900 in the UK. The 2018 F-Type i4 Coupe starts at $59,900 (plus $995 destination) in USA, in fact, while the Convertible is from $63,000. That’s despite having Jaguar’s latest InControl Touch Pro infotainment system, with an 8-inch widescreen touchscreen, as standard – something that will be the case across the F-Type range. In contrast, the cheapest V6 is the 340 HP RWD manual, at $68k for the coupe and $71,100 for the convertible, while the same car with the automatic transmission is $69,300 and $72,400 respectively.

Icona Vulcano - 100% Titanium body

Genesis

The Vulcano uses a consistent theme of dynamic triangles set in horizontal symmetry, reminiscent of the ICONA logo, which balance the dynamism of the volume. To connect the features and divide each part, tight lines complement the voluptuous shape, enhancing the car’s sensual power.




Alongside its astonishing performance and pedigree, the design of the Icona VULCANO is an evolution of the very advanced form language which was first introduced on the Icona Fuselage concept in 2011 by Samuel Chuffart, Icona’s design director. The aim of the design approach is to express the amazing capabilities of this extremely powerful car, while maintaining harmonious and generous shapes: bringing together the Beauty and the Beast.




The very first idea for the Vulcano was to use a front engine layout, and to use a strongly sculpted body side which would evacuate the hot air from the engine and reduce the air turbulence generated by the wheels. “As different ideas came together, the most challenging design issue which we faced was how to create a balance between power and beauty. When you’re trying to create a feeling of aesthetic harmony, you risk creating too many sweet lines, which decreases the feeling of power. On the other hand, if you make too much of the powerful features which are necessary to a super sports car such as its cooling cutouts and blades which manage the air flow, they become graphically too dominant, and this makes the car less beautiful. The way we found the right balance was usually by looking for the greatest simplicity” said Samuel Chuffart.


Exterior - Design

From the mesmerising molten lava and ferocious power of Mount Vesuvius to the frightening velocity of a stealth bomber and the sculptural curves of Zaha Hadid’s architectural masterpieces, the Icona Vulcano was inspired by symbols of power and beauty, both man-made and created by Mother Nature.

Talented young French designer Samuel Chuffart brings exceptional international experience to his role as design director of Icona. During his eight year tenure at Nissan Design in Europe and the US, Mr. Chuffart played an instrumental role in the creation and realization of the Nissan DNA which is known today. Mr. Chuffart then moved to Jaguar-Land Rover, before being selected for the coveted position of Chief Designer in Italy in 2008, successfully developing numerous production cars soon to be seen on the road.


Performance

The Vulcano Titanium was built by Cecomp, an Italian coachbuilder with a long and glorious history. The powertrain is the work of Claudio Lombardi, ex- Scuderia Ferrari director and mastermind of numerous world champion cars. Also key was Mario Cavagnero, the man behind the Lancia Racing team and father of the engine of many championship-winning cars, such as the famous Lancia Integrale and 037, as well as the complete Peugeot T16 family.

In his words, “A champion car is made from drivability, how well a man can feel the machine and the real performance comes with the art of bringing the optimum amount of power to the wheels.”

0-200Kmh in 8.8 secs | 670 hp | 220 mph | 840 N/m



Capable to be tuned to well over 1.000 horsepower should the owner demand it, the optimized 670 horsepower and 840 N/m of its supercharged V8 is coupled with a paddle-shift close ratio gearbox from Automac Modena, allowing 0 to 60 miles/hr in 2.8 seconds and 120 miles/hr in 8.8 seconds.



The shift times, the ratios and differential gear have been optimized and calibrated in order to achieve the best balance in the distribution of power. This system allows to eliminate the traditional gear lever replacing it with the pades connected to the sensors on the steering column. The result achieves an extreme simplicity of combined driving at a considerable speed of change by only touching the blades with fingers, without ever taking hands off the steering wheel.



Also the geometry of the suspensions have been revolutionized in respect of the traditional solutions.

The shock absorbers are fully adjustable in rebound and compression, and this makes the choice possible between several possible settings in order to identify the most suitable calibration to the drive type. The coil coaxial springs (which replace the typical leaf springs) combined with the new shock absorber has a tunable spring preload, this allows proper modification of heights and a better weight distribution on the front and rear. Front and rear anti-roll bars, widely adjustable, allow to vary the stiffness depending on use. The naked titanium body was sculptured by CECOMP involving more than 10,000 hours of hand-crafted work in the most pure form.



Interior

Made principally from carbon fibre and black alcantara and with fully adjustable leather bucket seats, the high tech interior has a race inspired feel. The interior design is driver-oriented, with functions such as GPS, radio and car diagnostics combined in a single large touchscreen, while all elements in the overall design have been integrated in a sophisticated and refined way.


The carbon fiber seats are the latest design made by the supercar reference name SABELT, Torino. The one off interior trim is made using the best Alcatara and leather from Poltrona Frau.


The meticulous workmanship comes from D’Arras, a company which works only for the most demanding customers of rare cars and are able to combine the most high-tech machine work with traditional hand skills.
